LIZZY UPDATE: HEAVES COMPLICATIONS. (March 12, 2025)

Howdy Friends! Miss Lizzy continues to be awesome and such a sweet and wonderful girl. You may recall we’ve been working on healing her Heaves. When we first adopted her August 20, 2024, Lizzy was underweight, suffered with LEPTO, and Heaves, neglected teeth and foot care. Over the months we’ve healed her Lepto, fixed her teeth and hooves, and totally restored her body weight. She looks great!

.

As to the Heaves, we began steaming her hay and treating with Chinese Contemporary Herbal formulation, from Dr Thomas’, For Love of the Horse,,, (www.forloveofthehorse.com) HEAVES Formula August 28, 2024. We’ve enjoyed great progress and while we continued her For Love of the Horse herbal solution, we stopped steaming her hay in December.

Her breathing was improved a lot, had stopped coughing, so it looked like we were on the homestretch. We knew however Lizzy would need to be on the Heaves Formula for many more months until completely healed.

But now we’ve suffered a bit of a set back.

About 2 weeks ago Lizzy began to cough every now and then. So we increased her Heaves Formula dosage. But sadly over the coming days her cough increased, and her respiration rate increased again. Even her breaths became more shallow again. So we increased her Heaves Formula dosage more.

Seeing no improvements we began steaming her hay again yesterday. So now Lizzy is on 8 scoops three times a day Dr Thomas’ Heaves Formulation, AND steamed hay. Steaming hay is important.

I’d like to ad, I am riding her about 2 times a week on trail about an hour each time. Her coughs under saddle are limited to only a very few coughs each outing. No signs of distress on trail. In fact she shows a true interest and eagerness. It is good to exercise if the horse is up to it, to help heal.

We’ll stay on track with steamed hay, Dr Thomas’ herbs, care and exercise and see what the coming months hold. We are confident we’ll get there. I remember it took 14 months to totally cure Miss Kessy of her Heaves, and Miss Lizzy is only in treatment since August 28, so only 6 months so far.

I share this for those who have horses with Heaves, there is a way to fix it.

Miss Lizzy is an awesome 16 year old Kentucky Mountain Horse.

We’ll keep you posted.
