BAREFOOT HOOF TRIMMING 101
Howdy Friends! I don’t believe in pareing the sole, at all. I don’t believe in trimming the frog, both these things will take care of themselves if you have your horse on proper footing, that is areas of rock, not just grass, mud and packed earth.
I don’t believe in using nippers to trim off the hoof wall from the bottom. I believe if you need nippers you’ve gone too long. The lamina begins to stretch as soon as the hoof wall gets too long, even by a little bit.
I trim every 3 to 4 weeks, with a rasp only. Set the hoof on the stand, file from the top down only – and only rasp what you are removing around the bottom edge.
I hold my file on the edge slightly angled so I get the mustang roll as I go. Never, ever rasp the wall above.
Hope this & what’s in my book helps. Feel free to keep in touch.
