WHAT MUD IS FOR

Some things Saturday knew were not really important, but seemed important to him. Things like mud, minnows and mushrooms. The day started out cloudy, but Kessy and Saturday went out the long trail anyway, even if rain could soon come. “We should turn back,” Kessy warned.

It sounded to Saturday as if she yawned. “We’ve only just set out,” Saturday protested and trotted, tail wagging, around the pokey Kessy. Who snorted but followed. Until they came to a mud puddle.

It wasn’t a big puddle. It was just the right sized mud puddle. Kessy stopped, “My hooves are not made for mud puddles,” she announced with a head toss, and tail flick.

Saturday pretended not to hear her and splashed right in. Until the mud puddle turned into. . . real mud. Thick, gooey, red and deep. Saturday sank to his knees, then deeper. Soon only his wide tummy stopped him from any more sinking. His tail wagged like a propeller, but it could not move him. His long glorious ears dipped into thick, slimy, red mud. “It seems I’ve discovered something called mud, and it holds on tight,” Saturday told Kessy. “What is mud used for?” he wondered.

Mud is put places where horses shouldn’t go,” Kessy stated with smart authority, just as rain began to fall. “So I don’t go there.”

Oh,” Saturday said. “Well could you go there just once to help me out?” The red mud began bubbling with big rain drops.

Kessy stretched out her long neck, careful not to step one inch into the red mud, grasped Saturday’s still wagging tail, and pulled him out.

Saturday stood free of mud, but his bottom half was no longer white. It was red. Red as the thick red mud. “I think mud is for coloring beagles red.” Now Saturday knew what mud was for.
