Howdy Friends! – A question for our friends enjoying this throw-back winter, and chilly temperatures, who have horses. How much extra hay do you reckon your horses are eating?
Friends even if you don’t have horses, you’ll find this interesting.
Forage, roughage is the mainstay of an equine’s diet. Miss Lizzy gets no grain. I used to feed grain, years ago, but that was then.
She does get a cup of high quality soaked timothy hay pellets morning and evening. In them I add her Kiss Trace Minerals.
Lizzy weighs about 1,000 pounds.
Regularly Lizzy eats her 15 – 18 pounds of low sugar (less than 10% non-structured carbs) orchard grass hay in her “slow hay feed net, on the ground.” Yes I test her hay. And no, her 2 acre playground has no grass.
Burning forage is not only a daily nutrient thing. It is also is the fuel that stokes the furnace keeping them warm on these extra cold days. On really cold days, I’ll step it up to 25 to 30 pounds of hay a day. How about your guys? ~ Gitty Up ~ Dutch.
